Tom's Verdict
๐ Tom Recommends
Papaya Plaza is one of those games that reminded me that cosy doesn't need to mean complicated. Sometimes I don't want multiple currencies, enormous production chains or a dozen different systems demanding my attention at once. Sometimes I just want a colourful little world where I can gather some fruit, help a few residents, place some decorations and quietly make things a little nicer than they were when I arrived.
๐ด That's exactly what I found here. Papaya Plaza is incredibly easy to settle into, and there was almost no pressure attached to anything I was doing. I could wander around gathering resources, clean up after the apparently rather untidy tourists, work on the town and meet its lovely collection of animal residents without ever feeling as though the game was trying to hurry me along.
๐ก The demo itself isn't enormous, but I ended up seeing pretty much everything it currently has to offer. I reached the two-star town rating, met all eight available villagers and unlocked all 48 building and decorating items. Most importantly, reaching the end didn't leave me feeling that I'd had enough of Papaya Plaza. It left me wishing there was more of it available to play.
๐ Its simplicity will undoubtedly be the sticking point for some people. Anyone looking for a deep city builder filled with complicated management systems may find what's here a little too lightweight. Personally, I don't necessarily want Papaya Plaza to become complicated for the sake of being complicated. I absolutely want the full game to give me more to discover, build and do, but I'd be perfectly happy for it to retain the wonderfully uncomplicated personality that made this demo so relaxing.
๐ Papaya Plaza gave me a cheerful little place to spend some time, asked very little of me other than to enjoy myself, and managed to leave me wanting to return. For a cosy game, I think that's a rather lovely compliment.
For me, Papaya Plaza earns a ๐ Tom Recommends for this demo version.

Why I Liked This Game
- โ ๐ด Wonderfully Relaxed - Papaya Plaza lets you potter around at your own pace without pressure, timers or complicated systems constantly demanding your attention.
- โ ๐พ Adorable Animal Residents - The colourful cast gives the town plenty of personality, and meeting all eight villagers available in the demo was part of the fun.
- โ ๐ก Simple Building & Decorating - Growing the town and unlocking new items provides a gentle sense of progression without turning decorating into an overly complicated management exercise.
- โ ๐ Gathering Feels Pleasantly Purposeful - Collecting fruit and other resources gives you plenty to do while exploring, with those materials feeding naturally back into improving the town.
- โ ๐งน Lovely Little Everyday Tasks - Even simple jobs such as cleaning up litter left by tourists help make Papaya Plaza feel like a place you're gradually looking after.
- โ ๐ Simple In All The Right Ways - It doesn't try to create depth by piling systems on top of systems. Sometimes gathering, building, helping residents and making a cute town nicer is more than enough.
- โ ๐ Left Me Wanting More - I reached the demo's two-star town rating, met all eight villagers and unlocked all 48 building and decorating items, yet my overriding thought afterwards was that I wanted to keep playing.
What I Didn't Like In This Game
- โ None For Me So Far - Papaya Plaza's simplicity won't appeal to everyone, particularly players looking for a deep or demanding city builder, but that simplicity was actually one of the things I enjoyed most. With this still being a demo, I didn't encounter anything I'd consider a genuine dislike.
